Concrete work in St. Marys, GA
We're a licensed and insured concrete contractor based in Kingsland, and St. Marys is one of the cities around it where our crew pours driveways, patios, steps and slabs. We work the same way across the state line in Yulee, with me on site beside our own small crew.
St. Marys gives us two quite different kinds of jobs, along with small shops and offices that need a slab or a parking area. Around the Historic District the houses are older, and a new walk or set of steps has to meet a porch or foundation that has shifted a little over the years, so I measure from what's actually there instead of from a drawing. In the newer neighborhoods, the dirt under a driveway was usually brought in and spread when the house went up, and it has to be dug out and packed before we pour, or the slab will follow it down.
Concrete services we offer in St. Marys
Concrete driveway building
On newer St. Marys lots, we dig out loose fill and pack a firm base before the driveway goes in, so it stays level.

A backyard patio here usually sits close to the house, so we set its slope to carry rainwater away from your back door.

Older St. Marys houses often suit stamped concrete, pressed with a brick or stone pattern, on a patio or front walk.

Front walks on St. Marys homes get straight edges from us, and enough slope that rain runs off instead of puddling by the door.

When the garage floor in an older house has cracked and sunk, we break it out, rebuild the base and pour a level slab.

Colored and textured finishes let a slab match the brick, siding or trim on your house, which matters more on older St. Marys streets.

Where a yard steps down from the house or a driveway cuts into a slope, a concrete wall holds the soil in place.

We pour interior floors for shops, storage buildings and additions around St. Marys, set flat and level so whatever goes on top sits right.

For pools in St. Marys backyards, we give the deck a grippy top for bare feet and slope it away from the water.

Older St. Marys porches often have sagging steps. We form new ones that meet the porch square, every step the same height.

We pour slab foundations for builders on newer St. Marys lots, checking the grade and every form before the truck arrives.

A foundation carries everything above it, so on a new home, garage or addition here we lay it out square from the first stake.

Small shops and offices around St. Marys need parking that drains and stands up to delivery trucks, so the base and thickness come first.

Footings are the buried concrete under a porch post, wall or addition, and on older houses we're often replacing ones that have sunk.

When an older St. Marys slab has dropped, we find out why it sank before lifting it, because lifting alone only buys time.

We saw-cut existing slabs along a straight line, so a new walk or patio can join an old one without a ragged seam.

What St. Marys yards ask of new concrete
The part of a slab that decides how it holds up is the part you never see. That's the subgrade, the packed ground the concrete sits on, and when a crew rakes the dirt level instead of digging out the soft layer and packing what's under it, the slab settles with the dirt and cracks where nobody planned. On a tight budget the base is usually the first thing people want to cut, and I'd steer you the other way, because a plain slab on a good base holds up better than a fancy finish on loose dirt. We won't pour on dirt that's only been raked, and before we set a single form we look at where the water off your roof and yard runs, so the new concrete falls away from your house instead of toward it.
Price and timing come down to your yard more than anything else. The size, any old slab that has to come out and the base work move the price, a permit and a dry day to pour move the schedule, and my written estimate shows you what's included.

Questions from St. Marys homeowners
Do I need a permit for concrete work in St. Marys, GA?
You may, because the City of St. Marys requires a building permit before anyone builds a new building or other structure on a property, or does renovations, repairs or additions. Whether your slab, steps or wall counts is the city's call, so we find out which office covers your address before we schedule the work and take care of the permit paperwork when the job calls for one. You can also look up your property's past permits on the city's online records site before you plan anything new.
What extra step applies to concrete work in the St. Marys Historic District?
If your property is in the Historic District, the owner or an authorized representative has to attend a pre-consultation meeting, an early talk with the city's Community Development Department, before any work can begin. You can schedule it by calling 912-510-4032 or by selecting YES on the city's permit portal. Please mention it at the estimate, so that meeting comes before we set a pour date.
Who calls for inspections on a permitted concrete job in St. Marys?
The permit holder or their authorized agent has to tell the building official when the work is ready for inspection. Work past each inspection point waits until the official approves it, and with concrete that matters, because nothing under a slab can be looked at once it's poured. When we handle the permit, we plan the pour around those approvals rather than ahead of them.
How much does a new concrete driveway cost in St. Marys, GA?
A driveway's cost here comes down to its size, its thickness and whether it carries rebar, steel rods laid inside to hold the slab together if it cracks, plus the tear-out and base work your lot needs. A plain broom finish, a light swept texture that gives tires and shoes grip, costs less than stamped or colored work, and a long drive the truck can't reach adds labor. I'll give you a written number once I've seen the lot.
How long does it take before I can drive on a new concrete driveway?
You can usually walk on a new driveway well before you can drive on it, because the concrete keeps curing, slowly hardening and gaining strength, long after it looks dry. Heavy trucks wait the longest, and before we leave I'll tell you when walking, cars and anything heavier are fine on your slab.
What causes cracks in a new concrete slab, and will mine crack?
Most concrete gets a few fine cracks as it dries and shrinks, so I'd rather tell you now than have it surprise you later. Control joints, the straight grooves we cut into the slab, give those cracks a place to happen in a line instead of across the middle, and they only work when they're cut on time. The wide cracks and sinking you see on old slabs usually trace back to the base, which is why we spend our time there and pour early in the day, so the top cures hard instead of drying out weak and dusty.
